interview

Q: Why is your book called Goodbye, Perfect?

A: We’re living through a unique moment in our collective lives where the chaos and uncertainty we face calls for a certain letting go, easing up on ourselves and our expectations, and holding compassionate space for our imperfections. It’s the only way we can do the work we’re being called to do for our individual and collective flourishing.

Q: What is the main message of the book?

A: At its heart is the dual call—to let go of the idea of perfection, and to bring compassionate awareness to ourselves, to our past, our beliefs, our reactions, and our emotions as fallible human beings. And to fall in love with our unique gifts and deepest longings, so we’re drawn by our dreams and not driven by our fears.

Q: What is the role of confidence?

A: Goodbye, Perfect is based on my postgraduate research on confidence. It wasn’t what I set out to study, which was women’s flourishing and self-actualization. But very soon, it became clear to me that one of the key blockers to self-actualization is something I call Fragile Confidence. It’s confidence that comes from achieving externally valued goals because of a deep sense of lack or unworthiness. It’s what hooks us onto praise, perfecting, pleasing ,and proving.

Q: Is this book for working women only?

A: It’s for everyone who recognizes that the extent to which we rise depends in the strength of the ground on which we stand. And most of us stand on weak ground and have inner work to do. It is the reality of our bio-psycho-social makeup as a human being.
