I used to work with the clinical population before I decided to embark on an extensive 3-year Master’s degree in positive psychology and coaching psychology.
The biggest change I noticed was in the clientele I now had. My job was less about helping them change their outlook on life by building more realistic evaluations of the people and situations around them. I was now seeing people who already had a positive attitude and big dreams and I figured my job was to expand their dreams and enlarge their vision for themselves.
But I was wrong. For I soon realized that no matter how positive your outlook, there’s no miraculous way of reaching your goals with the power of positive thinking alone. It takes a solid plan of action and dogged perseverance to stay the course despite the challenges, disappointments and failures along the way.
Change cannot happen without a positive attitude. But positivity alone was not helping many of my clients get unstuck. If you can relate, here are 2 of your greatest allies in goal pursuit:

A plan with concrete action steps
Once you know what you want, break it down into concrete action steps that are challenging, yet don’t frazzle you. Apply the SMART criteria to each step – specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound. Remember, actions speak louder than words. When you take action, you feed your confidence levels, and not the other way around as is often believed to be.

Patience and dogged persistence

Here’s a fun fact: It takes 13 hours to build a Toyota and 6 months to build a Rolls Royce. What do YOU want your life’s legacy to be?
